Lecture by Philippe Grosos, professor of philosophy at the University of Poitiers. For the past ten years, he has been working on a philosophy of prehistory.
Half-man half-beast beings, or theranthropes, are now little more than mythological figures. Yet for almost 50,000 years, in Indonesia and then in Europe, they have been a way for man to think about his place in the world. Their presence, however, has been uneven. Rare in the Paleolithic period, these representations proliferated from the Neolithic period onwards, to play a central role in certain cultures of the Metal Age, such as Ancient Egypt. Why this turnaround?
