Pierre, the young hero of the tale, with whom all the children of the world can identify, finds himself in the company of a small menagerie: there's the cat, of course, the duck, the bird and the wicked wolf. All the ingredients for a child?s sensibility are present: the deep forest, a brave grandfather and hunters. In this version, arranged for wind quintet and percussion, each character is represented by one or more instruments and a highly descriptive theme. Prokofiev uses the specific character of each instrument to describe the temperament and peculiarities of the characters.
