Experience European Heritage Days  in Sarlat-la-Canéda

On the third weekend in September, make the most of European Heritage Days to discover the treasures of the town of Sarlat in a new way!

Explore the little-known gems of Sarlat

during European Heritage Days

All weekend long, a number of activities and exhibitions are organised in the medieval town (House of la Boëtie, the former bishops’ palace, etc.) on that year’s national theme.
Depending on the year, you might have the opportunity to visit various buildings that are usually closed to the public, such as the Lantern of the Dead, the White penitents’ chapel, the Blue penitents’ chapel, the Sainte-Claire Abbey or even one of the Renaissance-style bourgeois houses.

Discover Sarlat, which reveals its built heritage

in the candlelight

Speak to any local and they will invariably recommend that you attend the Saturday evening event, affectionately known as “Heritage under the stars”! What makes it so special? More than 2000 lit candles that create a special, enchanted atmosphere through the streets of the city. Follow the candles along the streets throughout the town circuit.

The festivities begin each year on Place de la Liberté. After the mayor welcomes the crowd, the celebration begins!

Certain years, you might make a detour into the western portion of the Sarlat historic district, a more secret area but one that conceals a few true architectural gems…
