Description
"L?affaire de la bête de Sarlat et autres loups" by Maïté Etchechoury, archivist and paleographer, former Conservateur Général du Patrimoine
While the Beast of Gévaudan was wreaking havoc between 1765 and 1767, similar events were taking place in Périgord. In late summer 1766, "bêtes féroces" attacked inhabitants of several parishes in the Sarladais region. Earlier in the year, a rabid wolf had already caused several deaths in Vieux-Mareuil. Printed reports, parish registers and administrative correspondence help to trace these events and the measures taken, particularly in terms of health, by the sub-delegates of the Intendant of Guyenne.
